Cam workshops

Art and DT come together!

Year 4 had a great day last Friday investigating all kinds of strange and wonderful mechanical toys. Stephen Guy, an artist with an engineering mind, brought his collection of automata for the girls to explore and investigate. He explained the minutia of some of the mechanisms introducing a rich and technical vocabulary. During the second part of the workshop each girl built her own mechanism including a cam, a drive, a cam-shaft, a crank and cam-followers. The workshop was a very good starting point to this half-term’s art project. I wonder how the girls will turn their cam box into a work of art!
